Malcolm K. Jones, of West Hartford, CT, died on January 26, 2012 at Hartford Hospital, after a short illness, one month shy of his 90th birthday.
Mr. Jones was born on February 25, 1922 in Worcester, Massachusetts, the son of Roy and Gladys Jones. He graduated at the top of his class from Clark University in 1943, served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1946, and married his childhood sweetheart Marion Smith on November 6, 1943, with whom he shared a lifelong partnership of absolute love and devotion. He obtained a Master's degree in Romance languages from Harvard University in 1948, took his first teaching position at the Hawken School in Cleveland, Ohio where he spent three years, and thereafter relocated to West Hartford when he accepted a teaching job at Kingswood School where he taught French and Spanish, Chaired the Disciplinary Committee, and coached wrestling and soccer. Mr. Jones retired from Kingswood-Oxford School in 1987 leaving a legacy of service to the students he taught, and having consistently stood as an example of commitment to principle, self-discipline, responsibility, and simple hard work.
Malcolm and his wife spent over thirty (30) years associated with Pine Island Camp on Great Pond, Belgrade Lakes, Maine, where he conducted a small summer school, and Marion served as camp secretary. This unique boys' summer camp, located on an idyllic small island in Maine was an eagerly anticipated oasis each summer and a place of great joy for Malcolm and his family. It was his wish that his cremated remains be spread upon the waters of Great Pond at a spot where he and his wife spent many happy hours together.
Mr. Jones is survived by his wife Marion to whom he gave his complete love and affection, including her total care at home until her affliction with Alzheimer's disease required her placement at an assisted living facility. He is also survived by his son Michael and his wife Karen, of Bluffton, South Carolina, their two children Michelle Teuffel and Kristofer; and by his son Mark and his wife Joanne, Mark's three daughters Bethany, Lauren, and Melissa; and by his great grandchildren Justin and Jeremy Teuffel, and Kent and Dean Jones.
A man who exemplified the axiom that learning and education is a lifelong process, Malcolm was a voracious reader with an active intellect that sought constant stimulation. A principled man who may have appeared demanding, at times, but a caring, sympathetic gentle man who cared deeply for his friends and family—he will be missed.
A memorial service for Mr. Jones will be held at 10:00AM at the Chapel at Kingswood-Oxford School on February 25, 2012. Contributions in his memory may be sent to Kingswood-Oxford School at 170 Kingswood Road, West Hartford, CT 06119. For directions and online condolences, please visit www.taylorandmodeen.com.
