Sister Marie Christel (Marjorie A. Scholl) of the Sisters of Mercy died peacefully at St. Francis Hospital on August 30, 2016. Born in Long Island, New York on July 7, 1938 to the late Elwood and Marjorie (Crane) Scholl, she was raised in Newtown, CT. Sister entered the Sisters of Mercy on August 24, 1958 and professed her vows on June 26, 1961. She earned her B.A degree in Art History and a Master's degree in Counseling from St. Joseph College, now University of St. Joseph. In addition, Sister received a Master of Science degree from Central Connecticut State University. She worked as a licensed beautician for almost a decade while pursuing her academic studies. Her primary ministry for more than 20 years was as a creative, energetic and enthusiastic art instructor at Catholic High Schools including St. Paul's in Bristol and Mercy High School in Middletown before retiring to become a dedicated volunteer assistant at St. Mary Parish School in Newington. S. Marie Christel was an accomplished artist, water color, her preferred medium. She loved being a Sister of Mercy. Though her spirituality was simple and direct, in her painting and poetry, she saw beyond the human eye. Her love of people was abundantly expressed with an artist's touch in all of her ministries with her people- the children of God. She was predeceased by her brother John, and is survived by her sister-in-law Marcia Scholl; her brother and sister-in-law James and Cindy Scholl; several nieces, nephews, grandnephews, and grandnieces; and her community of the Sisters of Mercy, especially Sister M. Christel Nolan, her best friend and travel companion.
