Richard Miles Libbey passed away on December 1, 2016 in Bloomfield, Connecticut after a short illness. He was born July 6, 1929 in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii, the son of Lucile Hoogs Libbey and Valentine Libbey. His mother's family had been in Hawaii since the 1840's. His father was a New Englander who visited Hawaii on an around-the-world voyage and decided to stay. Richard attended The Punahou School in Honolulu and received his BS and MS Degrees in Civil Engineering from the California Institute of Technology. He saw active duty during the Korean Conflict in the U.S. Naval Reserve, spending three years in the Civil Engineering Corps. Upon his return to Honolulu and after employment in several positions in the construction industry he formed his Consulting Structural Engineering firm, Richard M. Libbey, Inc. in 1965. His firm designed many of Hawaii's high rise buildings. His projects included hotels, condominiums, commercial properties, and luxury residences as well as special projects such as the restoration of the Hawaii Theatre and the Arizona Memorial Shoreside Facility. He was active in many Honolulu community activities and served on various boards and committees. His later years were devoted to travel, and enjoying his historic vacation residence in Grafton, Vermont. He became a resident of the Duncaster Retirement Community in 2004, but did not spend much time there until he became a Connecticut resident in 2009.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Meredith Ewald Libbey, four children - Linda Libbey Davis, Richard M. Libbey, Jr., Donald C. Libbey and Kathleen Klima, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The family would like to express gratitude to the staff of the Hartford Hospital Clinic at Duncaster, Caleb Hitchcock Health Center at Duncaster as well as the staff at the Duncaster Retirement Community for the care and consideration shown. Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home will be in charge of the arrangements. Memorial Services will be announced at a later date.
