Richard Hendewich, 87, of West Hartford died peacefully at home on April 21, 2017. He born August 9, 1929 in Bucurest, Romania and was baptized and confirmed in the Evangelical Lutheran church of Romania. At an early age, Richard assumed responsibilities in managing the family business, a textile factory that his father and uncles founded. He married his beloved Stephanie on December 27, 1960 and they enjoyed 57 happy years together. Their son Edmond was born in Romania in 1963 and in 1965 the family immigrated to the United States by way of Germany. Their son Gerald was born in the U.S. in 1970.

Richard was able to build a new life for his family in the United States. He worked for the Heublein Company and retired in 1995. Through hard work he was able to fulfill the American dream and was proud to own a lovely home and provide college educations for his sons.
Richard was an old-fashioned gentleman. He always dressed impeccably, comported himself with the utmost graciousness and appreciated the formality of family gatherings and holiday rituals. He was happiest at gatherings of family and friends when he would fulfill his duties as host and bartender and regale his guests with his stories.

He is survived by his wife Stephanie, his sons Edmond and Gerald, his grandson Alex and daughters-in-law Terry and Heather.
A private service will be held at the funeral home of Taylor & Modeen at 9:30 am on Thursday April 27, 2017 followed by burial at Cedar Hill Cemetery where he will be laid to rest at 11am.
