Air Force Emblem

Dr. James E Bullock passed away at the age of 94 on February 10, 2017, surrounded by his sons and many, many friends.

Jim is survived by his sons, Alan and Charles, along with his much loved daughters-in-law, Robin and Kristen, his four grandchildren, Emily, Eric, Erika and Alexis, and his sisters, Marjorie and Faye, and brothers, Doug and Dean. Jim was preceded in death by his loving wife of 56 years, Anne Jackson Thatcher.

Jim was born on June 21, 1922 in Pitt County, North Carolina, to Lester Mayo Bullock and Ora Shaw Bullock. He grew up in Pitts County and attended Stokes High School. Jim served honorably in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 through 1945 as an aerial navigator in the Troop Carrier Command in Europe. Always academically inclined, he received his undergraduate degree from East Carolina Teachers College, followed by a Master's Degree at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and a Ph.D. at Temple University. Jim was a passionate educator; his career included work as a Professor in the Department of Education at Hillyer College, Chairman of the Education Department at the University of Hartford, Vice Principal at Waverly Elementary School and positions in the Superintendent's office in the Hartford School System.

Jim was an avid reader of Shakespeare, a creative writer of poetry and always easy with a smile and a cheerful story. He loved gardening, and in the last several years, was particularly proud of his hollyhocks. He lived by his view that if you are friendly and caring to others, you will bring out the best in people and they will share your friendship and pass some of the caring on to others.

Jim passed away peacefully at his home at Seabury, and will be sorely missed and remembered by many whose lives he touched.

Calling hours will be on Saturday, February 18 from 2pm to 4pm at Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home at 136 South Main Street, West Hartford. A remembrance and memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on April 9, 2017 at Heritage Hall at Seabury, 200 Seabury Drive, Bloomfield. Please make a donation to the Nantucket Historical Association or a charity of choice in lieu of flowers. For directions and online condolences, please visit www.taylorandmodeen.com.
