Florence M. Bowmar, 93, peacefully joined the Lord on Wednesday, October 5, 2016, at Avery Heights, Hartford, CT. She was a member of the First Church of Christ Congregational in Farmington, CT. She was the daughter of U.S. Methodist Missionaries serving in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where she was born. She began her lifelong love of music with piano lessons at age 5. Her family returned to the US for a ministry in Idaho and eventually relocated to New England. Florence was a graduate of Boston University majoring in Music Education. She began her teaching career in Farmington, CT as a Supervisor of Music where she, for the school's first time, created a music education program for grades 1 thru 12. After 10 years, she relocated to Hicksville, Long Island, NY to teach, specializing in Junior High and Elementary Music. Throughout her life she played the organ for Churches in Long Island New York and Connecticut. Florence followed her "wanderlust" for travel and truly enjoyed her adventures. She sailed on both the Queen Mary and the Queen Elizabeth. She visited 24 countries across 5 continents. She preserved her memories with her other prized hobby; photography. She returned to Farmington, CT and continued her musical contributions with the Musical Club of Hartford. Maintaining her photographic skills, she was a member of the New Britain Camera Club and her photos received many awards. Upon entering Avery Heights, she happily continued her love of music and the camera and often led discussions on Opera and Photography.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Rev. Thomas and Bertha Bowmar, her sisters, Margery Demaine, and Ruth Potter. She is survived by her sister, Dorothy Livingston (William), and nieces, Joan Demaine, Kathy Converse, Marilyn Rodriguez (Jesse), Donna Roberts; nephews, Kenneth Potter (Dori), Richard Demaine, Jeffrey Roberts Sr.; and six great nephews and nieces and four great-great nephews and nieces.
