Elna Abjornson Thornley passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 22, 2017 at the age of 90 after 10+ years living with dementia. In her final years Elna resided in St. Mary's Memory Care Unit in West Hartford, CT.

Elna was born in Brooklyn, NY to Carl and Laura Abjornson. She was raised in a family rich in traditional Danish customs along with her brothers Carl and Roy. In Brooklyn she met and married her beloved husband of 50 years, George. Elna and George enjoyed walks on Shore Rd. along the Hudson River, going to Coney Island and Jones Beach. They especially loved going to the dancehalls where they would dance for hours. They later moved to East Brunswick, NJ where they raised their children. Upon George's retirement they moved to Hampton NJ and in 1987 moved to West Hartford CT.

Elna and George were devoted to family and looked forward to holidays, family vacations and time spent at the Jersey Shore, and attending their grandchildren's school and sporting events. Elna and George also loved to travel and did so extensively. Their trips included traveling cross country, trips to Denmark to visit family, other countries through Europe and China.

The greatest joys in Elna's life came from her grandchildren.. With George they relished anytime spent with them. Elna was lovingly called Mormor - meaning mother's mother in Danish. Elna enjoyed the fresh air, the sun on her face and the ocean breezes. She had a fondness for nature and loved tending to her flowers. She enjoyed watching the animals that came to her garden and the birds that visited her many feeders, especially cardinals. She believed they were visitors from heaven letting us know they were OK. Elna lived by the principles of kindness, care, respectfulness, hard-work and forgiveness.

Elna was predeceased by her parents and brothers, her sister-in-law Lorna Abjornson, her sister-in-law Marge Bernius and her husband George. She is survived by her son Thomas (Tee) and his wife Ginny of Hazlet, NJ, and her daughter Barbara Roberts, her husband Rick, and their children Brendan, John, and Laura Roberts of West Hartford CT. She is also survived by 4 nieces, 3 nephews, her friend from grade school Solveig Gallaudet and her husband Frank of Fort Lauderdale FL. and several cousins in Denmark.

Elna's family would like to thank the loving care she received by the dedicated caregivers at St. Mary's and at Arbor Rose where Elna resided in The Garden's Memory Care Unit before moving to St. Mary's.
