Eleanor Louise Cook, a long-time resident of the West Hartford area, died Friday, February 24, 2017, at Avery Heights.

Born in 1930, Eleanor received undergraduate and graduate degrees in early childhood education. She enjoyed a successful career as an educator, teaching first grade in the West Hartford public schools for thirty years. Following that, she served as an early childhood education instructor at both Central Connecticut State University and St. Joseph College, where she worked until retirement.

Eleanor traveled extensively and grew up in what she called "a reading family." She remained an avid reader throughout her lifetime and served on the West Hartford library committee. In 2009 Eleanor moved to Avery Heights where she remained until her death. A loyal and active resident, she took part in The Height's open houses and regularly chaperoned tours of the facility.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents, Willa Reid Cook and Everett Mowry Cook, and older brothers, Henry Mowry Cook and Robert Reid Cook. She is survived by several nieces, nephews, and their families.

A Memorial Service celebrating Eleanor's life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at the Chapel of Avery Heights, 705 New Britain Avenue, Hartford, with the Rev. Dr. Len De Roche officiating.
