Bernice Louise Hansen Shepard of Hamden and long time resident of West Hartford died on August 8, 2016 at the Connecticut Hospice in Branford. She was born in New Haven on February 19, 1923, the daughter of the late Hans J. and Margaret (Wright) Hansen. She grew up in East Haven where she attended local schools and was active in the Old Stone Church. She graduated from New Haven State Teacher's College (now Southern Connecticut State University) and worked as a teacher in East Haven until 1950 when she married Stanley W. Shepard, moved to New Britain and taught elementary education in Berlin. In 1955, they moved to West Hartford where she spent many years raising her children, substitute teaching in the public schools and donating her time to community service projects such as Meals on Wheels and The American Red Cross. She taught Sunday school at the First Church of Christ Congregational, West Hartford and loved to garden, to bowl and was an avid reader as well as an ardent fan of good music, especially the Metropolitan Opera of New York. She traveled extensively with her husband and particularly loved the Marginal Way in Ogunquit, Maine.

Bernice is survived by a son, Lee Hansen Shepard of South Windsor; a daughter, Jane Kirstine Shepard of Hamden; and grandsons, Brian Lee Shepard and Scott Joseph Shepard both of South Windsor. She is predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Stanley Waldron Shepard; and by her brother, Carl Norman Hansen, of Orange, CT.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday August 16, 2016 at 2:00pm in the chapel of The First Church of Christ Congregational, 12 S. Main St., West Hartford. A private burial will occur at the convenience of the family.
